A resource for employers who hire newcomers

Employer Brochure

Do you want to improve the retention of staff and create a more inclusive workplace? Do you hire or are you looking to hire immigrant talent?

The Welcoming Communities Coalition recently conducted research which found that local employers would welcome a resource to give to new hires who are newcomers to Canada during their orientation period. We have designed a brochure for that purpose!

Contact us to receive print or PDF copies of our new Employer Brochure. The brochure outlines services available at The Immigrant Welcome Centre that are free to newcomers in our community. These free services can help newcomers improve language skills, make social connections, identify settlement needs, fill out government applications, and prepare for Canadian citizenship.

Vancouver Island – and sectors across the country – needs immigration for a wide range of reasons, from cultural enrichment to economic practicalities. Labour shortages across industries are bringing economic factors to the forefront. The federal government has noted that “[i]mmigration already accounts for almost 100% of labour force growth, and with 5 million Canadians set to retire by the end of this decade, the worker to retiree ratio will drop down to only 3:1. This is a clear sign that we have a strong economic need for increased immigration.”

As an employer, there are many ways you can benefit from hiring and retaining newcomers and internationally-trained professionals.

If you would like a printable PDF of the Employer Brochure to give to newcomer employees, please contact Coalition coordinator Julie Keumbehdjian at julie.keumbehdjian@immigrantwelcome.ca or at 250-338-6359.

And, if you have identified other gaps or challenges related to workplace equity and inclusivity in the community, we also want to hear about your experiences.
