Every holiday season, The Campbell River Shoebox Project collects donations for vulnerable women in the North Island. This year, the Shoebox Project has decided to deliver gift cards to women impacted by homelessness instead of boxes filled with gifts and essential items due to the ongoing pandemic.

"Our gifts will look different this year but our goal remains the same as always: to help every woman in our community feel a sense of joy, belongingness and hope this season," local coordinator Alison Skrepneck said in an email.

The local chapter's goal is to distribute 525 gift cards valued at $50 to local women - 450 in Campbell River and 75 in Port Hardy and surrounding areas.

There are three ways to donate this year:

  • Make an online donation to the Campbell River chapter of The Shoebox Project. Donors can select Campbell River or indicate Port Hardy/North Island in the notes section.
  • Create a virtual shoebox or select a celebrity-curated shoebox (for the celebrity-curated option, 50% goes to the local chapter and 50% goes to support efforts nationally)
  • Drop off gift cards valued up to $50 at a local drop-off location between Nov. 12 and Dec. 8:
    • In Campbell River: Coastal Community Credit Union (Discovery Harbour), La Tee Da Lingerie (Shoppers Row), or Coho Books (Willow Point)
    • In Port Hardy: North Island Crisis & Counselling Centre Society (Beverly Parnham Way)

The Shoebox Project for Women celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. In the past decade, the organization has distributed approximately 242,150 shoeboxes across Canada, the USA, and the UK and an additional $1.2 million in gift cards and essentials to vulnerable women accessing more than 510 shelters and community agencies.
