LINC Students Contribute to Hope Rocks

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) students enjoyed a field trip to the Campbell River Art Gallery in June, shortly before their classes wrapped up for summer break.

LINC 1-2 and 5-7 students explored artist Karen Tam’s exhibition Autumn Tigers, which delves into the history of Chinese immigrants in Canada through immersive installations and focuses on the history of Chinese culture on Vancouver Island. The field trip led to interesting discussions among the students, many who shared their own history and immigration experiences in Campbell River.

The students also enthusiastically took part in Hope Rocks, painting the word “hope” in languages of their choice on rocks for display at the art gallery and sharing their vision of what hope means for the future.

Hope Rocks is a partnership of the art gallery and the Immigrant Welcome Centre’s Welcoming Communities Coalition that aims to showcase the diversity of languages in our community. Both Autumn Tigers and Hope Rocks will continue until July 17. At the end of the Autumn Tigers exhibition, the painted rocks will be displayed in other parts of the community.
