New podcast: Refugee experiences as told by Canadian youth

The Child and Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC) has launched a new podcast series: The Refuge.

The Refuge “brings together youth with refugee experience, academics, and community partners to discuss issues affecting refugee children, youth, and families in Canada.”

Two episodes were released last month with more to come.

The first is an introductory episode featuring CYRRC’s scientific director Michael Ungar, CYRRC’s project manager Simone Chia-Kangata, and Nabiha Atallah, the advisor of strategic initiatives at Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia.

In the second, the hosts are joined by a former refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo now living in Nova Scotia, Praise Mugisho, as well as social worker Dr. Ifeyinwa Mbakogu and academic Dr. Erika Goble. The overview says: “Listeners will hear about some of the challenges refugee youth face at school and work, including racism, language barriers, and more.”

The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google Podcasts, which are all linked to the CYRRC website.

You can also listen to the experiences of former refugees who settled locally in Campbell River and the North Island by revisiting the Immigrant Welcome Centre’s 2016 video series Uncommon Courage.
