Working together for diverse, inclusive and welcoming communities

Happy Holidays!

Our Fall season has been a very busy one for the Coalition. We have been making new connections while reconnecting with our coalition members through meetings, community events, and community forums. We have also been building and expanding our local immigrant partnerships, and implementing a number of important local projects that support enhanced Newcomer integration and settlement.

The 2019 Fall Collaboratories (in Campbell River and Comox Valley) were successful. The events were amazing opportunities to brainstorm with participants who are members of community service organizations. Amazing ideas were brought forth especially about how we can inclusively build and improve our community for everyone who calls North Vancouver Island, home. Some newcomers also shared their experience (successes and challenges) as regards feeling welcome to the community and this was a special highlight of the events.

Current Coalition Projects!

Passport to Settlement: The Passport is being distributed to help newcomers settle and increase interaction with community organizations and citizens. Newcomers are using the tool to better navigate Campbell River to gain knowledge and awareness of multiple community resources in order to leverage their personal and professional success.

Conversation Cafes: These are monthly conversations with residents and newcomers in Campbell River and Comox Valley that explore creative and innovative ways to foster a welcoming and inclusive community.

The Annual Campbell River International Welcome: This event is hosted each fall in Campbell River and Courtenay in collaboration with community partners to celebrate as a community and show our rich history of welcoming new community members.

Newcomers Matter 365 days a year - 365 Campaign: This innovative fundraising campaign was developed to ensure a more stable and sustained approach to supporting Coalition projects and outreach. The campaign is a targeted sponsorship and donor fundraising effort to support Coalition community outreach initiatives and special events by encouraging donations of $365 or more. We will be advancing the campaign in the coming year, 2020. Please consider contributing to our campaign. Your donation will make a tremendous contribution towards increasing our efforts in supporting Welcoming Communities in North Vancouver Island.

Other Coalition projects currently in development include; the planning and hosting of a series of Immigrant Youth Engagement Focus Groups in Comox Valley, the Language Referral Tool and the Immigrant Advisory Table.

Upcoming Events! Save the Date!

The first Steering committee meeting in Campbell River is scheduled for Wednesday 18th of December, 2010 to review the outcome of the Collaboratory and plan next steps.

Coalition Organization profiles

Please let us know if you would like your organization and newcomers support services profiled on our blog!

Did you know: That 28% of BC residents are immigrants, which is the second highest proportion of immigrants in Canada?

Immigration has always been a part of Canada's history, bringing vibrancy, diversity and economic growth. Our goal as a community is to identify and reduce barriers facing newcomers and ensuring that we are providing a welcoming and inclusive community for all who call North Vancouver Island home.

Special thanks to Campbell River Community Foundation for funding the Wednesday, November 20 Collaboratory at the Oyster River Resort, Campbell River region. We would also like to appreciate all the volunteers and staff of the IWC for their endless support for the success of the coalition. And thank-you to all of you, our Coalition members for your steadfast commitment in cultivating and fostering Welcoming Communities in Campbell River and the Comox Valley!
