Community Leadership
A free program to help employed newcomers improve their workplace language skills.
Do you employ newcomers? Would you like to offer free, community-requested training to help them to thrive in your workplace? Here’s your chance to make a difference in your organization!
The Immigrant Welcome Centre has opened the Workplace Language and Culture Hub, a program in Campbell River that aims to enhance the ability of newcomers to thrive in the Canadian workplace.
This new innovative program, which has been made possible through generous funding from RBC, aims to help newcomers improve their workplace language skills and increase their awareness of workplace culture. The program is free to eligible newcomers, and it’s intended to support both newcomers and businesses alike.
It’s important to note that this program was developed in response to data derived from the Needs Assessment Survey conducted by the Welcoming Communities Coalition in 2020, where local businesses and other community partners identified a need for workplace-oriented language and culture training.
Who is this program for?
The program is free to eligible newcomers who want to improve their workplace language skills and increase their awareness of workplace culture. It’s intended to support both newcomers and businesses alike. An attendance commitment of 75% minimum is required.
What's the curriculum?
The program runs at the Campbell River office on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening for 2 hours per evening, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm . Students can attend either the Fall Session (September to January) or the Spring Session (February to June.)
Students will learn about:
Teamwork, punctuality, hierarchy, courtesy, ethics, confidentiality, written and unwritten rules of a workplace, employees rights and responsibilities, social media conducts, positive/appropriate behaviours, conflict resolution, negotiation, safety, communications, public speaking and presentations, small talk, leadership and initiative, accepting and providing constructive criticism, flexibility, business etiquette, and clarifying communications.
Students will focus on workplace culture language training.
How can I enroll my employees?
We are inviting employers to refer their employees who are either permanent residents or provincial nominees aged 17+. Priority will be given to youth aged 17 to 29 who have lived in Canada for two years or less. Referring your employees is simple: download the registration form and send it to info@immigrantwelcome.ca or drop it off at our Campbell River office at 200-1170 Shoppers Row, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
The registration form asks the following questions:
- Why is your employee a good candidate?
- Is your employee committed to attend the program?
- What skills do you hope they gain from this course?
- How are you going to help your employee during the program?
Candidates will be interviewed to evaluate their eligibility.
Remember, employees’ professional development growth helps businesses to reach their goals and retain valuable employees! A recent study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development found that 95% of hiring managers considered employee training as a key retention tool
