October is Newcomer Month at Vancouver Island Regional Libraries

October is Library Month, and this year Vancouver Island Regional Libraries (VIRL) are extending an especially warm welcome to newcomers.

“[W]e want to ensure they know we’re an inclusive space that serves all ages, genders, ethnicities, languages, and regions,” the VIRL said in its October newsletter. “Most of all, we want them to feel welcome.”

Our local library branches are rich in resources for newcomers to Canada and the Island. Visit this page to learn about some of the resources for newcomers, immigrants, and refugees, including:

  • Books from the Adult Learning Collection
  • How to get a free library card online
  • Electronic resources for children and teen learning
  • Job exploration and planning
  • Music catalog

The Vancouver Island Regional Libraries reached out to the Immigrant Welcome Centre and our Welcoming Communities Coalition to talk about how we can spread the word so more newcomers know about library services and resources.

Our settlement staff share information such as library resources with clients (call our office to book an appointment to learn more about resources in our community), and our Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) instructors ensure our students are aware of how the library can assist English language learners.

Our Courtenay LINC class recently took a field trip to the Courtenay library. The staff pointed out many helpful audiobooks, adult literacy materials, and other resources. The library’s supportive staff are always willing to answer questions and help people find what they need – just approach the information desk for help! The Courtenay location also generously provides learning space for our students.
