Ukrainian mom and son find solace in the Comox Valley

Iana and her son Mark had to flee Ukraine due to the ravages of war, leaving behind their cherished family, friends, and possessions. Their lives changed dramatically, and in March 2023, they arrived in the Comox Valley seeking refuge. However, their new beginning presented numerous challenges, especially for Iana, who didn’t speak any English and felt lost in starting afresh.

With the help of a generous host, Iana managed to find her way to the Immigrant Welcome Center, a place recommended by fellow Ukrainians in the area. Iana’s warm personality and ever-present smile quickly made her and Mark familiar faces among the center’s employees.

Grateful for the support she received, Iana expressed that she always felt a sense of belonging at the Immigrant Welcome Center, considering the staff a trustworthy and helpful group of individuals. They became her anchor as she navigated the intricacies of life in Canada.

The center’s assistance proved invaluable to Iana, who faced challenges due to language barriers. We provided her with information that helped enable her to apply for BC Hardship, removing work permit restrictions, and sign up for the local Farmers’ Market. By offering their expertise and support, the staff made Iana’s life easier and empowered her to take steps toward a brighter future.

Recently, Iana embraced a new opportunity by enrolling in LINC classes, where she diligently strives to improve her English skills. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom, as she devotes her free time to practicing the language as well. Through her efforts, Iana hopes to foster greater independence and integration into her new community.

In the midst of these challenges, Iana and Mark discovered solace in the Comox Valley, finding a welcoming home among other family members who had also settled there. Surrounded by loved ones and supported by the Immigrant Welcome Center, they embarked on a journey of resilience, adaptability, and hope for a brighter future in their new Canadian home.
