Community Kudos: Wachiay Friendship Centre receives funding for affordable housing project

The Welcoming Communities Coalition partners with organizations and people in the community who are committed to growing diversity and equal opportunities in Campbell River and the Comox Valley. This is the second Community Kudos post on our blog where we recognize a member’s recent accomplishment or amazing thing they are doing in the community to make it more welcoming.

The Wachiay Friendship Centre (WFC) successfully received funding from BC Housing’s Community Housing Fund for its affordable housing proposal. Congratulations!

The society’s proposal for a new five-storey housing development in Courtenay was one of 49 projects selected by the provincial fund in June. The development will provide 40 affordable rental units for Indigenous elders and individuals, and will be constructed on an under-utilized parking area adjacent to the current WFC building at 17th and McPhee Avenue. (The Comox Valley Affordable Housing Society was also successful in its application to build 52 units for low-to-middle income seniors.)

The WFC prides itself on being a leading member of the Comox Valley Coalition to End Homelessness and states that this development is one of the actions included in the Comox Valley Five-Year Plan to End Homelessness.

For more information about this project we encourage you to visit wachiay.org/housing.

Later this month, the centre will also be hosting a Lunch and Learn opportunity in partnership with Courtenay-based law firm McCubbin McGarvey.

The presentation will focus on residential tenancy law, including rights and responsibilities as a tenant, how to protect and enforce your rights, and how to navigate the residential tenancy legal system in B.C.

The event will take place on Aug. 26, 12 to 1 p.m. at the Wachiay Friendship Centre (1625 McPhee Ave.). The event is free and lunch will be provided. Pre-register by contacting Julia at 778-225-0310 or at julia.d@wachiay.org.
